The short version
- Five candidates filed nomination papers for the Karnataka West Graduates' Constituency of the Karnataka Legislative Council.
- Congress nominee Mohan Limbikai filed after a procession, and student leader Kanthakumar is also in the fray.
- The election is scheduled for 23 October; the BJP has been campaigning for S. V. Sankanur in Hubballi.
Five candidates filed nomination papers for the Karnataka West Graduates' Constituency of the state Legislative Council on the penultimate day of the filing window, The Hindu reported on 5 October. The list includes the Congress's nominee, Mohan Limbikai, who filed after a procession, and student leader Kanthakumar. Deccan Herald, updating the same contest on the evening of 5 October, reported that further candidates including Sankanur were expected to file.
The seat is one of two non-territorial constituencies — graduates and teachers — filled by an electoral college of graduates and teachers rather than by the general electorate. That design is why the campaign has looked different from a normal Karnataka election: it is organised by colleges, alumni associations and professional bodies rather than by booth-level networks.
The two front-runners
The contest has settled into a pairing between the Congress's Limbikai and the BJP-backed S. V. Sankanur. The Hindu reported that the BJP has been stepping up its campaign for Sankanur in Hubballi, with party figures urging graduates to vote for him — an indication that the seat is being treated as winnable rather than as a formality.

Why a graduates' seat matters to the state
The graduates' constituencies are small in voter numbers but not in ambition. They return members who sit in a chamber that appoints little and scrutinises much, and they are among the few seats in the state where organised professional groups — university alumni, teachers' bodies, employers' associations — can be counted as the constituency itself. Both parties know a win here delivers an endorsement that is reusable well beyond a single vote.
Hubballi, the constituency's centre of gravity, is also a place where the two parties' local arithmetic differs sharply from the rest of Karnataka. Campaigning there is not a formality for either side, which is why a filing-day procession was newsworthy and why the BJP's outreach to graduates was reported at all.
What the numbers look like
The state's schedule has been public since September: the New Indian Express reported on 22 September that the polls for the graduates' and teachers' constituencies would be held on 23 October. That leaves roughly a fortnight and a half of campaigning between the close of nominations and the vote — enough time for the alumni networks to matter, and short enough that late endorsements could still move a fluid electorate.
What happens next
With nominations closed, the next procedural step is scrutiny and the announcement of the final ballot. From there the contest is a short, dense campaign fought in colleges, professional associations and social media, with the count on 23 October as the fixed point everything else is organised around.
For now the position is this: five names on the ballot, the Congress and the BJP each behind a candidate, and a seat that both parties have decided is worth winning rather than banking.
