Royal Challengers Bengaluru's second straight IPL title, and what the 2026 final actually showed

A five-wicket win in Ahmedabad gave Rajat Patidar's side back-to-back championships. The margin flatters a final that was, by the losing captain's own account, closer than the scoreboard suggests.

The short version

  • Royal Challengers Bengaluru beat Gujarat Titans by five wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on May 31, 2026, to win a second consecutive IPL title.
  • Rajat Patidar is the third captain after Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni to lift back-to-back IPL trophies.
  • Gujarat Titans' director of cricket Vikram Solanki said afterwards his side were probably 20 to 25 runs short.

The safest way to read the 2026 Indian Premier League final is not as a rout. Royal Challengers Bengaluru won it by five wickets, chasing in front of a capacity Ahmedabad crowd on the evening of May 31. But the losing side's director of cricket, Vikram Solanki, said after the match that his team were probably 20 to 25 runs short, and that they had been beaten by a side that executed better on the night rather than by a side that overwhelmed them.

Both things are true, and the distance between them is the interesting part. A five-wicket margin flatters the chase. A 20 to 25 run assessment flatters the bowling and the pressure applied in the middle overs. Cricket finals are decided in that gap.

  1. Result: Royal Challengers Bengaluru beat Gujarat Titans by five wickets at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad.
  2. Consequence: a second successive IPL championship for Bengaluru, and for captain Rajat Patidar.
  3. Precedent: Patidar becomes only the third captain, after Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni, to win the title in consecutive seasons.

A captain who would not stay in the moment

Patidar's post-match press conference in the Narendra Modi Stadium was notable less for what he said about the final than for what he declined to say about it. The 33-year-old noted that the title had landed on his birthday, said it was the best gift he could have asked for, and then moved the conversation to the next season within the same answer. He has now won two of the last three editions.

It feels really good. It is the best gift because it is my birthday today, so it cannot be better than this.

— Rajat Patidar, at the Ahmedabad press conference

In a tournament where most captaincy narratives are written after the fact, that is a small discipline. Two titles make a franchise the benchmark of the decade. They also make every future failure a comparison, which is a burden the older successful sides of this league have carried for years.

The celebrations that followed were of a different order. Reports from Bengaluru described supporters gathering in the streets, with Virat Kohli and Krunal Pandya among the players drawn into the dancing. A city's relationship with a domestic franchise is not a serious subject, and it is also one of the few genuinely large shared moments Indian sport produces outside a national tournament.
