NASA names the Artemis 3 crew — and the mission will not set foot on the Moon

NASA named the crew on June 9: Randy Bresnik, Frank Rubio, Andre Douglas and the European Space Agency's Luca Parmitano. None of them is going to the Moon. Artemis 3 is a rehearsal, and the agency is candid about the gap between a rehearsal and a landing.

The short version

  • NASA named the Artemis 3 crew on June 9, 2026: commander Randy Bresnik, Frank Rubio, Andre Douglas and the European Space Agency's Luca Parmitano.
  • All four fly in Earth orbit, docking Orion with commercial lunar landers from SpaceX and Blue Origin; none lands on the surface.
  • The two-week demonstration is targeted for 2027, with the programme's lunar landing still aimed at 2028.

NASA named the crew of Artemis 3 on June 9, 2026: Randy Bresnik, who will command, Frank Rubio, Andre Douglas and the European Space Agency's Luca Parmitano. The announcement came two months after Artemis 2, which carried Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen around the Moon, went further from the Earth than Apollo 13 and marked the first crewed flight of Orion. None of the Artemis 2 crew is expected to fly again that soon; NASA rarely assigns astronauts to consecutive missions.

What makes Artemis 3 different in kind from Artemis 2 is the destination. Rather than travelling to the lunar surface, Artemis 3 will focus on rendezvous and docking operations in Earth orbit with commercial lunar landers under development by SpaceX and Blue Origin, rehearsing the mechanics that later landings will depend on. It is a two-week demonstration targeted for 2027, and the agency's own programme still puts a lunar landing in 2028.

  1. Crew: Randy Bresnik (commander), Frank Rubio, Andre Douglas and Luca Parmitano of the ESA.
  2. Artemis 2: completed April 2026; four astronauts; Orion's first crewed flight.
  3. Artemis 3: crew named June 9, 2026; orbital rendezvous and docking.
  4. Duration: a two-week demonstration targeted for 2027.
  5. Landing: not part of Artemis 3.

Why the crew profile is narrower than a landing mission's

Because Artemis 3 stays in Earth orbit, the selection criteria are narrower than for a landing mission. The preview reporting expected NASA to prioritise astronauts with expertise in spacecraft operations, test piloting, engineering and spacewalks. It is a crew built for docking procedures and for handling a vehicle that other companies are building, which is the qualification profile of an operations team rather than an exploration team.

The announcement drew immediate comment on one feature of it: all four crew members are men. NASA's astronaut corps has been roughly balanced since the 2010s, which makes composition a live question whenever a mission profile does not require a specific skill that only one gender holds. The engineering objectives give the agency a defensible basis for the choice; the argument is about how much of a profile has to be built to justify it. There is a second, quieter complication. Blue Origin's rocket exploded on a launch pad in Florida during an engine-firing test shortly before the announcement, and one of the two landers Artemis 3 would dock with is that company's. NASA's Jeremy Parsons called the setback a learning opportunity and said the agency was confident the rocket would be ready in time.
