The short version

  • US and Iranian officials said they had agreed to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Pakistan mediated; Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the agreement early on Monday local time.
  • Iranian media published a draft 14-point text covering Hormuz, sanctions and a reported $300 billion reconstruction fund.

US and Iranian officials said on June 14, 2026 that they had reached an agreement to end their war and to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The Indian Express reported it as a preliminary framework rather than a signed instrument, and noted that it sent oil prices lower while leaving the fate of Tehran's nuclear programme to further negotiations.

The announcement came by an unusual route. Donald Trump posted on Truth Social at around 5:30 pm in Washington on June 14 that the deal was complete, shortly after Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif — whose country has served as a mediator — announced that a deal had been struck in the early hours of Monday local time.

The 14 points, and how firmly they are known

Ahead of a signing ceremony scheduled for the following Friday in Switzerland, Iran's semi-official Mehr news agency published what it described as the draft contents of a 14-point memorandum. Neither government officially confirmed the details, and the points should be read as the Iranian state media's account pending verification. The reporting says the text covers the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions and a reported $300 billion reconstruction fund.

  • War: joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran began in February 2026; the conflict has since run for close to four months.
  • Mediator: Pakistan, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announcing that a deal had been struck.
  • Ceasefire: a permanent one across all fronts, including Lebanon.
  • Hormuz: reopening within 30 days, 'under Iranian arrangements', with the US naval blockade lifted on the same timetable.
  • Sanctions: an end to sanctions on Iranian oil and energy products, and a US pledge of no new sanctions.
  • Reconstruction: plans from the US and its allies worth at least $300 billion.
  • Nuclear: Iran repeating that it will not produce a nuclear weapon, with the programme itself left for later talks.
  • Signing: scheduled for the following Friday in Switzerland, and unconfirmed.

The dating deserves care. The announcement came on the evening of Sunday, June 14, and the memorandum was described as due to be signed in Switzerland on the following Friday, June 19. That was a plan rather than an event: neither government had confirmed the text, and the points quoted here are Iranian state media's account of a draft. Nothing in the published record establishes that a signing took place on that date, and a schedule is not a treaty.
